Em pleno século XIX Samuel Jones (Tommy Lee Jones) decide voltar para casa, após muitos anos ausente, numa tentativa de fazer as pazes com sua filha Maggie (Cate Blanchett). Maggie não vê o pai desde quando era criança, mas precisa de sua ajuda quando sua filha mais velha é sequestrada por Chidin (Eric Schweig), um psicopata que possui poderes místicos. Chidin já sequestrou outras crianças, sendo o responsável por uma grande quantidade de mortos no Novo México. Juntos, Samuel e Maggie precisam encontrá-la antes que Chidin atravesse a fronteira com o México.
